Durante varios meses he seguido el movimiento de los dreamers, he convivido con familias, amigos directos que no encuentran la posibilidad de hablar porque no saben con quién, porque les avergüenza, les pone en peligro. Algo que no pensaron les limitaría las posibilidades de cumplir el sueño que venían buscando cuando inmigraron, por no saber, por creer que se trataba solo de llegar, ser buenos ciudadanos en la comunidad, buenos estudiantes. Mientras más me voy integrando a la comunidad, más y más veo estos casos, mis compadres, el amigo de mi amiga, mi voluntario, el compañero de mi esposo, varios casos alrededor mío, ¿y cómo ayudarlos?, ¿cómo apoyar?. La respuesta vino cuando se me ofreció la oportunidad de crear esta obra. Sí, el personaje principal es una joven como los miles en nuestra comunidad; en silencio, sin creer que hay posibilidades, algunos sin esperanza o con esperanza en algo externo; la solución mágica que les facilite la existencia, una nueva ley, nuevos reglamentos financieros. Durante el camino de entender esta problemática, he aprendido que se trata justo de eso; un camino a seguir… y que las respuestas se encuentran dentro de nosotros mismos, dentro de nuestra familia, nuestra comunidad. En ejemplos de otros que han hecho lo que creemos imposible. Sí, la política llegará algún día a ofrecernos una solución legal, ¿pero mientras tanto? ¿cómo seguir trabajando para lograr nuestro sueño?, ¿cómo ayudarnos?, ¿cómo mantener la esperanza en alto?. Veo la oportunidad en el teatro de abordar un tema que “nos llegue”, que esté en el radar de nuestro día a día, de nuestra existencia como Latinos inmigrantes en este país. Algo que nos identifique, que nos de una razón de crear y empezar a hablar sin temor. Algo que rompa el silencio en un par de horas, algo que alimente a nuestro propio Jardín de Sueños.

I have been following the dreamers for the past several months, coexisting with families and friends who do not see the platform to speak,  don’t know with whom,  limited due to shame,  or because it can put them in danger.  About something that they never thought will limit the dream that they followed when they immigrated here… because they did not know,  because they believed that was enough with arriving, be good citizens, be good students. The stories I encounter are becoming more and more common: a friend of my friend,  one of my volunteers, my husband’s collegue; several cases around me. And what to do? How to help? The answer came to me when I was given the opportunity to direct this play. Yes,  the main character is a girl like the thousands of young people in our community, living in silence, believing there are not opportunities; some of them without hope or relying on an external solution.  The magical solution to resolve their existence; a new legislation, new financial rules. On the road I’ve traveled in my quest to understand this problematic, I have learned that essentially, any solution is a road to travel. And that the keys to that trip are within ourselves, within our families, within our own communities…in the examples of those people that have done what we believe impossible.Yes, politics will one day  give us a legal road, but meanwhile? How do we continue to work towards our dreams? How to help? How to keep  the high hopes? I see in theatre the opportunity to address issues that «hit home,» themes that are part of our daily life, our existence as Latino immigrants in this country. Of something that can  identify us,  that can encourage us to create and allow us to speak  without fear.  Something that can break the silence for a couple of hours… that can feed our own Garden of Dreams.
