Lewis & Clark experience ‘Duende’

Lewis & Clark experience ‘Duende’

Here’s news from Dañel Malán, the artistic director of our touring/educational arm Teatro Milagro:

While I’ve been busy by day rewriting B’aktun 13, by night I was putting Duende de Lorca back together with my cast, rehearsing in the Milagro Zócalo space.  Last night (Sept. 15) we did our first fall performance at Lewis & Clark College in SW Portland.  This was our last ever Portland performance of this show.  In another week we head to Missouri.

Last night’s show was preceded by a “Journeys” workshop, in which we explored stereotypes through metaphor and poetry.  Students and staff attended both the workshop and performance and were very pleased with the outcomes, expression of diversity and the opportunity to feel the empowerment of turning a negative statement – such as “All Mexican eat beans” into a cultural statement – “We are the people of the beans.”

In attendance at the show was Oregon Arts Commissioner Brian Wagner, who thoroughly enjoyed the performance, and provided some very nice feedback, along with a few other people who filled out audience surveys.  Here are just a few of the comments about the show:

Rory Stitt did a great performance, keeping the character of Lorca throughout.
The performances of the actors and the songs and dances were great.
I enjoyed the use of English & Spanish.
Everything felt so real, as if you were actually there.

The best part though, was the super delicious vegan dinner they prepared for us – we LOVE Lewis & Clark College!
