In 1846, two hundred US soldiers defected from the American army to fight for Mexico during the Mexican-American War. These Irish immigrants came to be known as the "Los San Patricios," revered in Mexico and Ireland as folk heroes and considered traitors to the US military.
Milagro is proud to present, in association with Radical Evolution, The Corrido of the San Patricios, written by Beto O'Byrne, developed in collaboration with Radical Evolution and El Teatro Campesino.
Beto O’Byrne is a multifaceted artist from the pine forests of northern East Texas. He holds a BA in Writing from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana and an MFA in Dramatic Writing from the University of Southern California. He began his experience as an artistic leader as Artistic Director of Austin Latino Theater Alliance, where he created the ALTA Performing Arts Showcase and directed the annual holiday tradition, La Pastorela.
As a playwright his works have been performed in Los Angeles, Austin, San Antonio, and New York City and has performed as a musician and performer across the country. He is the co-founder of Radical Evolution, a multi-disciplinary performance group based in Brooklyn, NY.
Beto believes that the arts are a fundamental necessity of civic life, and works both with arts and arts advocates to find ways to responsibly and sustainably improve the lives of talented artists in communities where he lives and works.
In addition to his work as an artist, he has provided one-on-one non-profit arts consulting services for individuals and small organizations, focusing on institutional fundraising and development. He is an often collaborator on national projects and activities, having worked with organizations such as Theatre Communications Group (TCG) (Artistic and International Programs Associate), the national Latino/a Theatre Commons Steering Committee (co-chair of the resources sub-committee), and La Cooperativa of NYC Latin@ Theatre Artists (founding member).
Kinan Valdez is a 25-year ensemble member of El Teatro Campesino. Reared in the collective milieu of the famed social justice theater company founded by his father Luis Valdez, Kinan served as ETC’s Producing Artistic Director until 2017. As a director and theater-maker, Kinan explores the intersections between the mundane and the mythic by combining elements of epic storytelling, popular music and visual pageantry to create participatory theatrical spectacles. He is excited to return to Milagro after directing Lydia in the 2016-2017 season. Recent credits: La Pastorela: The Shepherd’s Play (El Teatro Campesino, 2019), Adiós Mama Carlota (2019, San Jose Stage), Valley of the Heart (2018, Center Theatre Group), La Esquinita USA (2017, Arizona Theatre Company), The River Bride (2017, Arizona Theatre Company), and Zoot Suit (2017, Center Theatre Group). Aside from his professional theater work, Kinan is an Adjunct Professor of Theater Arts at the University of California Santa Cruz and a national advisor for the Latinx Theatre Commons.
