Celebrating the paths of historical and imagined heroines
The Milagro familia can expect the unexpected in Season 37: Mujeres Bravas. Staff are having an active dialogue on what reopening will look like for Milagro, developing plans to offer digital options in the Fall. We are also reimagining Community Artes programs, exploring how free arts and culture events can be brought to the community in a post-pandemic landscape. With a spirit of optimism, flexibility, and innovation, we are committed to presenting a curated lineup of Mujeres Bravas works honoring the bravery of women and girls throughout history.
INGENIO 2020
Season 37 opens with the return of our INGENIO playwright development series. Through INGENIO, we seek to create a space where Latinx playwrights of all races can develop their plays in a safe, supportive environment with mentors and artists to whom they can relate. INGENIO 2020 will move to the digital realm, offering the opportunity for collaboration beyond geographical limitations, as Milagro will produce this year’s festival in association with Teatros Unidos, an emerging and growing collective of Latinx theatre organizations.
This year’s festivities include the presentation of a new work by Mark Pinate. Inspired by Sophocles’ ancient Greek tragedy, Antigone at the Border takes place in the present, near the U.S.-Mexico border.
Blast Off

This bilingual work for K–8 audiences follows a young girl inspired by Dr. Ellen Ochoa, the first Latina astronaut. Blast Off will launch in schools and will be paired with the STEAM curriculum from Teatro Milagro’s UNIDAD Teacher Workbook. Dr. Ellen Ochoa is delighted to have been chosen for this Theatre for Young Audiences biographical play, which will be directed by Reina Solunaya and choreographed by Gabriela Portuguez.

Winter marks the return of Maya Malán-González’ modern-day, Latinx take on Dickens’ classic Christmas Carol. This new adaptation provides a fresh perspective on time-honored holiday traditions. Combining strong female leads, modern music, and holiday cheer, join us for a new Christmas Cuento for today.
Huelga

“¡Si, se puede!”
This historical narrative shares the struggles and accomplishments of Dolores Huerta, labor rights activist and union organizer who co-founded the United Farm Workers. Huelga will launch in January for Teatro Milagro’s national tour and will be accompanied by the social justice curriculum from the UNIDAD Teacher Workbook, available in five bilingual formats. The Dolores Huerta Foundation has given their approval for this new biographical play.

Don’t Eat the Mangos

“I’m coming, old man. Stop your god damn ringing.”
Content Warning: Abuse. In this dark comedy set just outside of San Juan, Puerto Rico, three sisters care for their aging mother and dying father. As a hurricane approaches one evening, a tragic family secret is revealed. The production will be a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere in collaboration with Cleveland Public Theatre in Ohio and Magic Theatre in San Francisco.
Community Artes
Milagro has secured funding for a Community Engagement Coordinator. This new staff member will create new programs while bolstering Milagro’s signature free community programming, which include commissioning traditional Día de Muertos altars; Posada Milagro, a family celebration; the quarterly tertulia: art + conversation, featuring music, art, and poetry; and enfoque, a monthly discussion of themes surrounding Milagro MainStage productions.
