Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, we could not avoid
reflecting on the Arab Spring, and the universal nature of uprising as people
worldwide expressed their dissatisfaction with their leaders. Studying the
history of Mexico, we were especially intrigued by Las Adelitas, the women who left their homes
to join revolutionary efforts, providing cooking, medical and transportation
support. Many of these women picked up arms and became fighters. Yet very
little is known about the women themselves as almost no personal accounts,
letters or journals have survived to tell their stories. These women risked
their lives for the cause and received no personal glory for their efforts. We
imagine many died without knowing that their efforts made a difference.
In this year’s Day of the Dead celebration, ¡Viva la Revolución!, we honor women
revolutionaries of the past and the present, who take a stand for a be tter
world.
¡Viva la Revolución! opens Oct. 21 and
continues through Nov. 13. For a performance schedule and ticket information,
