local musician Gerardo Calderon. Calderon’s new musical compositions will take
us around the world through a combination of Latin American, African and
indigenous rhythms sounds. This concert will include dances from Argentina,
Peru, Mexico and Spain, and will move your body with rhythms meditational to
upbeat!
Calderon is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Born and raised in
Mexico City where he grew up surrounded by music, dance and culture, Gerardo is
the musical director of Grupo Condor and Nuestro Canto. While living in Mexico
City he studied classical guitar at the Escuela Superior de Música and then
began his investigation of traditional Mexican music. Gerardo currently studies
Music Therapy at Marylhurst University. Gerardo’s first solo CD, “Somtir” features a
blend of gentle string sounds and the soothing sounds of the pan flutes, and 20

Chilean guitarist Ricardo Cárdenas fills the Milagro Theatre with his
extraordinary range of classical and folkloric music presented in his unique
relaxed, disarming style. His enchanting repertoire includes composers such as
Heitor Villa-lobos, Antonio Lauro, Agustin Barrios, Fleury, J. Cardoso, Joao
Pernambuco and his own arrangements of Chilean songs. (With special guest
flautist Leeann Davis, TBD)
– Including members of the Alex Krebs Tango Sextet and featuring Vicente Griego
tango performer Alex Krebs and flamenco powerhouse Vicente Griego together at
the Milagro Theatre like you have never seen them before! Modern Tango and Flamenco meet Jazz and Rock –
turning these genres back into their “popular” forms. This concert and dance performance will
transport your spirit to South America and Spain, with the rhythm of the bandoneon and Griego’s powerful voice.
Tango started off as a popular music form in Buenos Aires. This show will present tango in a modern
popular music light, combining it with influences of jazz, rock and flamenco. The show will also feature traditional
flamenco as well as flamencos arranged in a tango style. Tango and flamenco
dancing will also be featured.
Krebs has been teaching Argentine Tango internationally for the past 16 years,
playing the bandoneón and directing various groups for the last 12 years and
has run the all-tango dance school “Tango Berretín” in SE Portland for the last
12 years.
Griego “El Cartucho” from
Dixon/Embudo, NM, has devoted his life to the study of Cante Flamenco, the art of flamenco singing. In 1992, Vicente began
touring the US, Canada, and Latin America with the Jose Greco II Flamenco Dance
Company, where he was mentored by Caño Roto singer Alfonso Gabarri, “El Veneno”
of Madrid, Spain.

Latin American bolero, Joaquin Lopez delivers a world of musical nostalgia and
elegant melancholia. He’ll perform lush ballads and melodies underscored by the
acoustic beauty of the classical guitar, violin and harp featuring musicians
Gerardo Calderon, Paul Engler and Antonio Centurion incorporating the digital
artwork of Hampton Rodriguez and Marcos Aguirre
through projection.
brings us one of Portland’s popular standbys—La Bonita in the Alberta Arts
District and Overlook neighborhoods. Raised in Beaverton, Oregon, Joaquin
attended Southern Oregon University in Ashland. At 19, he landed his first
acting job as 2nd Young Man in Blood Wedding at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival
where he was introduced to the poetry and drama of García Lorca and
subsequently become greatly influenced by Lorca’s work. Following in his
father’s footsteps, Joaquin picked up the guitar and began writing songs. In
2003 he met flamenco player Stan Olmsted and started a musical collaboration
performing the poems of Lorca. Throughout the years he’s developed his own
approach to songwriting and often collaborates with different organizations and
communities creating and recording songs as a group experience. Joaquin commits
himself to promoting Latin American Arts and Culture and producing cultural
events—Sabor a Mexico/Taste of Mexico at the Portland Art Museum, Spanish
Language performances for Filmusik, and Voz Alta with Portland Latino Gay
Pride.
