This is how they spend their summer: Milagro actors take on dinosaurs

Imagine a cheesy sci-fi movie, but with every word, whistle and way-out music created onstage by the performers in this unique concert of the movie arts. That’s what’s happening when Planet of the Dinosaurs plays the Hollywood Theatre. An original score written by local Jazz renegades “The Blue Cranes” sets a new mood for the 1978 science-fiction film.  The stop-motion dinosaurs are given character by Filmusik’s own Foley artists who use an arsenal of noise props to create the sounds in the film.  And a troupe of local voiceover artists dub the film live from the original script, matching the hapless space-travelers who crash land on a prehistoric planet.
And on June 23, the dialogue is presented in Spanish by an ensemble of Latino actors – all who have met and worked together at the Miracle – including Joaquín López, Enrique A. Andrade, Nurys Herrera, Alberto Romero, Angela Bolaños-Osorio, Francisco Girón and Gabriela Portuguez. Audiences in the US may not be accustomed to hearing different actors play the roles of Hollywood stars, but it’s the norm across the globe when big budget Hollywood cinema is exported abroad. Often, foreign voice actors become as famous in their own country as the American actor they speak for.
Planet of Dinosaurs was released in Latin America as “El Planeta de los Dinosaurios” in 1979.  While no print seems to survive from its Latin American release, Filmusik is more than happy to imagine it for
you with a translation by Kolumba Khedzor, Edna Vazquez and the cast of talented actors. The Spanish performance on June 23rd is sponsored by La Bonita Taqueria and Mayahuel Catering.
“I am grateful to be part of this innovative project with Filmusik,” says Joaquin, who was last seen onstage in Teatro Milagro’s touring production of American Sueño. And thank goodness for the Miracle Theatre, because without them I couldn’t have met such a talented group of Latino actors to ask to be a part of this. For Latino actors and performers, Miracle is our central creative hub and foundation.”
The Spanish-language performance on June 23 begins at 8 p.m. at the Hollywood Theatre. Tickets are $8-$10 from Filmusik.com or (503) 281-4215.
