Mario Alfonso Fortino Moreno Reyes, better known in the Spanish-speaking world as «Cantinflas», was an extraordinary artist whose talents included acting, producing and screenwriting, and who became one of the pioneers of the Golden Age of Mexican film. His flair for comedy earned him credit as «the best comedian alive» from no lesser luminary than Charlie Chaplin. His renown earned him the role of the ingenious valet Passepartout in the 1956 Oscar-winning Hollywood production of «Around the World in 80 Days», and while he had second billing in the English-speaking world, everywhere else the movie played Cantinflas was listed as the comedy’s lead, turning him into the best paid actor in the world. The role also earned him a Golden Globe Award.

Not much came from further attempts at introducing the then-established character of Cantinflas to an English-speaking audience; the effort failed mainly due to the specific puns and syntax that characterized the «persona» he portrayed: street slang, disjointed sentence structure and double entendres, which correlated to the actor’s own disadvataged youth growing up in the rough and tumble Mexico City neighborhood of Tepito.

Nearly 60 years later, the world is getting an opportunity to remember the real man behind the colorful character larger than his silver screen persona. A movie is now making its way to US theatres telling the story of the «pelado» who became a movie star, who then propelled movie making in Mexico, took leadership in the industry, and used his fortune and influence to help orphans around the country.

Mario Alfonso Fortino Moreno Reyes, mejor conocido en el mundo de habla española como «Cantinflas», fue un artista extraordinario cuyo talentos incluyeron la producción y la escritura de guiones, y quien se convirtió en uno de los padres de la Época de Oro del cine mexicano. Su talento para la comedia le ganó elogio como «el mejor comediante vivo» de nada menos que Charlie Chaplin. Su fama le trajo el papel del ingenioso sirviente Passepartout en el film de 1956, «La vuelta al mundo en 80 días» que ganaría 5 premios Oscar, y mientras que Cantinflas aparecía en segundo lugar en los créditos en el mundo angloparlante, en el resto del mundo Cantinflas se listaba como estrella de la comedia, convirtiéndolo en el actor mejor pagado del mundo. Por su interpretación, Mario Moreno ganó un premio Golden Globe.

No rindieron gran fruto otros intentos de introducir el personaje ya establecido de Cantinflas a un público de habla inglesa; el esfuerzo fracasó debido principalmente a los juegos de palabras específicas y la sintaxis que caracterizaban al personaje que interpretaba: argot callejero, estructura incoherente a las oraciones y juegos de palabras relacionados con la propia juventud marginada del actor quien creció en el miserable y violento barrio de Tepito en la Ciudad de México.

Casi 60 años después, el mundo tiene nuevamente la oportunidad para recordar el verdadero hombre detrás del colorido personaje que existió más allá de la pantalla grande. Una película se está abriendo paso en los cines de Estados Unidos que cuenta la historia del «pelado» que se convirtió en una estrella de cine, quien impulsó la creación de películas en México, tomó el liderazgo de la industria, y utilizó su fortuna e influencia para ayudar a los huérfanos en todo el país.
